We see a lot of great candidates lose out on new jobs – that they are very qualified for – because they fail to demonstrate common courtesy during the interview process. This is an unfortunate situation that can be easily avoided. We believe that being prepared, punctual, and professional is key to making a great impression on prospective employers.
Preparation
It is always important to prepare for your interview. This includes researching the company and position you have applied for. Researching the position could be as simple as reviewing the job description in detail so that you can speak to how you would fulfill the specific job requirements, or how you would learn to do so. Researching the company to learn more about their background and operations is often as easy as reading their website, and it will show the hiring manager that you are taking the interview seriously and you have vested interest in the position.
Another great tip is to practice interview questions in advance. Most companies ask a variation of the same questions during initial interviews. Having some idea of how to answer questions about your background and work history, your goals and career plans, and why you want the position is a great way to start. It is also a great idea to prepare a list of questions that you would like to ask them.
The better prepped you are for your interview, the smoother and more effortlessly the interview will flow. Moreover, being prepared will enable your expertise and personality to come through in the interview rather than just your nerves. Overall, if you do your homework beforehand, you will make a much better impression during your interview.
Punctuality
We never cease to be amazed at how many candidates show up late for their interviews. While we understand there are extenuating circumstances that may cause tardiness, it is most often the result of poor planning. Prior to your interview, check how long it will take to get to your destination and give yourself a buffer for traffic or unexpected delays. On the day of, keep your eye on traffic reports to learn of major incidents and road closures before you leave. That way you can change your route or increase your buffer time accordingly, and you can avoid the last-minute panic associated with unanticipated obstructions once you are en route.
If you realize you are going to be late, a simple call to the office or your recruiter to notify them in advance will go a long way. If you find yourself running a bit too early, grab a coffee at a nearby café and take the time to do some last-minute prep!
Professionalism
We once had a client dismiss a qualified candidate because they showed up for the interview wearing sneakers. While dismissing a candidate based on footwear may sound harsh, what it really comes down is the candidate’s lack of professionalism. Interviewers expect candidates to do their best to make a good impression. Showing up at a professional setting in casual attire indicates that you are not taking the interview process or the job opportunity seriously. Further, the interviewer may assume that you are putting your best foot forward and may be concerned about how you would present and conduct yourself at work every day should they hire you.
We suggest dressing for the role that you want. Your research into the company should give you a sense of the office environment and therefore what style of dress is appropriate. As a general rule, business casual is the way to go, and remember: no sneakers! And bear in mind that professionalism is associated with attitude. Not only do you need to dress the part, but you must always be polite, clear, and professional.
Remember, this is an interview, designed for the interviewer to determine whether you would be a good fit for their company. All of your actions are being taken into account, from the way you dress, the way you speak and the way you carry yourself.
