I love working from home. It means that I can care for my family while continuing to serve clients around the clock. As a nursing mom, this work-life choice makes everything so much easier. I don’t have to stress about pumping, daycare, or meal prep. Both my husband, Ghaz and I, work as a team at home and at AGENTC™: we both get to care for the kids AND the business. Sometimes I jump on a call and he stays with the kids and other times, I watch the kids while he is busy sourcing and screening candidates.
But as parents of four children, two of whom are under the age of three, we sometimes have our calls interrupted by tantruming toddlers. And anyone who works from home knows how that can go.
The recent video of the BBC dad interview completely resonated with us. We’ve almost collapsed from embarrassment on more than one occasion, under similar circumstances! Some comments, both online and in the mainstream media, regarding Robert Kelly’s mini intervention were less than flattering though. A few went so far as to call him out for ‘abusing’ his daughter as he tried to get her out of the picture. Many criticized Mr. Kelly for apologizing profusely for the interruption. And more than a few wondered if he was wearing pants. But here’s the rub: he was conducting an interview on a serious topic, and his immediate concern was that the interview would be viewed as unprofessional, at best, and a total disaster, at worst.
We get that. Just as there are people on the airplane who will give you the stink-eye when they see you getting on with four kids, there are plenty of people who will judge Robert Kelly for his skills, or perceived lack thereof. Even he has admitted to being concerned that no news agency would ever ask him to comment on television again after that. But that’s just wrong. Life happens and it tends to happen when you least expect it. He handled the situation pretty well, all things considered, and the fact of his children and their little invasion into his interview does not diminish his abilities as a political scientist one iota.
Luckily for us, realtors understand what it’s like to be parents building a business. Most realtors have been through it at some point in their career, so they can definitely appreciate and support our initiative to serve this market, while caring for young children.
In honour of what we do and how we do it, and with Mr. Kelly’s story in mind, we decided to record our marketing promo with a little guest in the room 🙂
What we do, balancing our work and our personal lives together, we do well. The proof is in the repeat and referral business we get time and again, from satisfied realtors who have found the assistant their business needed. Sourcing, screening, qualifying, and interviewing are just some of the steps we take to ensure that we are uncovering hidden talent that possess both skills and the right attitude to be successful in this industry. If a toddler crashes a call, so be it. It doesn’t change our ability to get the job done!
